Marionette

At first, I feel a bit like Karish is interrogating me. But the more we talk, I feel like he's just curious about me. That helps me relax a little. At least, until I start to wonder why he's curious about me.

I'm trying really hard not to become infatuated with him. I may have been a virgin, but I wasn't completely ignorant about sex. I've heard other women talk, especially older and more experienced women. They warned girls not to fall for the first guy who makes them feel special or is mildly competent in bed because he's just as likely to move on and leave you broken-hearted.

"Is that all you want out of life?"

His question didn't sound judgmental, more shocked. I was still taken aback, though. No one had ever asked me what I wanted. Not in the overarching purpose of your life sense. The children would ask what kind of flowers I wanted or things like that. But Karish seemed legitimately interested in what I wanted, which gave me butterflies in my stomach.

And it was such a big question I didn't even know where to start.

"I told you before. The children keep me going."

"And going and going and going, it seems. Do you ever stop and take a break?"

The question makes me feel strange as it works its way through my mind. I decide to stall for time.

"What do you mean?"

"When do you do something for yourself? You asked for help getting through the winter. What happens after that?"

"As long as there are no issues to stop us. I'd take them to the nearest settlement, and I can find work there and just keep doing what I do."

"That's good. Hopefully not this type of work, though."

"What do you mean by that?"

Was I not... good?

"You're not cut out for this job."

Oh, gods. I'm a terrible lover.

"I'm sorry. I appear to have insulted you. When I said you're not cut out for this, I meant your personality."

If his plan isn't to insult me, he's doing a terrible job.

"Oh, fuck, that came out wrong."

And I'm apparently really doing a terrible job hiding my emotions. He's reading me like a book.

"You see, that's another thing. You look insulted right now. You can't be insulted easily and survive like this. But what I meant was you are too stubborn and dignified for this. The women here, they all break eventually. Some get broken into it and just settle in. Some break out, and they run off. It's not meant for women like you."

"I'm not that different from most women."

"But you are. You really are."

"There are plenty of stubborn and dignified women, and I'm sure more than a few of them have made a living... How was it the requisitions officer said it this morning? Oh, yes, laying on their back."

"But you don't have to."

"Because I'm terrible in bed? Or just really unattractive to you? Is that why you didn't like what I was wearing?"

Both of us are starting to get upset. I can tell.
